July 2006 - Izmir is the third busiest city in Turkey, the first two being Ankara and Istanbul, obviously. It's built around a deep bay so that the most effective way of travelling from one side to the other is by boat. We went from Alsancak (posh) to Karsiyaka (not quite as posh although still very far from downmarket) and back to Alsancak by boat. Then walked along the dangerously trendy Kordon (the harbour front) past all the bars and restaurants and impressive statuary to Konak pier, which used to be a harbour and customs area and is now a VERY posh shopping mall with seafront cafes and a new cinema. Expect to be searched when you go in.
