The House of the Virgin at Ephesus

July 2006 - At the House of the Virgin Mary at Ephesus. The Virgin Mary is choosing to remain unseen in this photo kindly taken by a fellow tourist.

The House of the Virgin Mary is one of two main contenders for being her place of death, the other being in Jerusalem. It says somewhere in the Bible that Mary was given into St John's care and travelled to Turkey and Ephesus with him. The belief that the Virgin Mary actually died at Ephesus stems from the detailed visions of a german nun, Anna Katerina Emmerich, from her sickbed. Thousands of Christians and Muslims make pilgrimages to the chapel here and drink the local spring water. In any case it is very tranquil and pretty and makes a worthwhile trip, plus there are some great souvenir shops, especially if you like Holy Soil etc.
