Feb 2006 - snow melting from an ornate wysteria-clad balcony in Izmit - a city on the sea of Marmara, close to Istanbul and home to a famous university, Kocaeli. Izmit was seriously hit by the great 1999 earthquake but is now a thriving place. I was taught to play backgammon in a cafe overlooking the sea, where they have live rock in the evenings. I need some refresher lessons....
